Pop Quiz Central...

Today we had a pop quiz in regular math. Students were allowed to use their notes from class for this quiz (and all answers should have been able to be found in their notes). This should help students to see the importance in taking good notes. I have warned students that pop quizzes can happen at any time, any day so they need to always be on top of what they are learning.

Challenge students reviewed their study guides today and will have a quiz tomorrow over Investigations 1 + 2.

Conferences were a HUGE success with nearly 87% attendance by parents and unbelievably great comments on the survey! Kids set new goals for themselves and really did a fabulous job "taking charge" of their learning, reflecting and sharing! I am super proud of everyone involved! :-)

REMINDERS:

~Don't forget that throughout this unit, if you ever see anything that has to do with what we are learning in class (stretching/shrinking), bring it in (or a description of it) to share with the class and Miss Kohr will give you extra points for your class grade! :-)

Today's homework:
Challenge: Quiz tomorrow over Investigation 1 + 2 (study guides were given last week and we reviewed them today in class)
Regular: None

Also: remember to...

~Redo any assignments necessary (you have one week to redo work in math)

~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Question of the Day: GO BACK AND LOOK AT OTHER POSTS...no more new questions of the day will be posted until others get answered! :-) :-) :-)

**YOU CAN'T JUST LOOK THIS UP ON THE INTERNET...YOU MUST SHOW ME A MATH STRATEGY FOR FIGURING OUT YOUR ANSWERS TO GET IT CORRECT!!!

Conferences Tonight and Thursday

Challenge classes worked on their Wump Hats today and regular math reviewed their Wumps and area/perimeter review packet. Conferences are tonight and Thursday night from 4:30-8 p.m. Each student has been scheduled a time to meet with their parents to review their grades and portfolio. Please be sure to let one of your 7th grade core teachers know if you have a problem with your scheduled time; otherwise, I am excited to see you all! :-)

Miss Kohr...Where Were You???

Yes, I was out Friday and it threw the classes a little off schedule as they were unable to complete their assignments properly so I am giving you all one more day to correct anything that was misunderstood from the day I was gone. Challenge math is right on schedule and started their Wump Hats today by making their predictions for how the new rules/equations will affect where the hat moves on the graph. We will continue tomorrow...

~Don't forget that throughout this unit, if you ever see anything that has to do with what we are learning in class (stretching/shrinking), bring it in (or a description of it) to share with the class and Miss Kohr will give you extra points for your class grade! :-)

Today's homework:

Challenge: None

Regular: Finish any area/perimeter sheets and Wumps not finished by today (you are getting an extra day...LUCKY!)

Area + Perimeter Matters!

Today regular math classes are reviewing finding areas + perimeters as I have observed the major need for review. These are skills that are essential for understanding what Stretching and Shrinking has in store this quarter. Please be sure to ask questions when you don't remember how to find an area or perimeter. The sheets you completed in class today have examples at the top that are very helpful as is the Resource Packet I gave you the first week of school.

Challenge students did a self-assessment of their Wumps and discussed ways to shrink Eddie today. We recognized that 1/2X is the same thing as both .5X and X/2. This will help us to determine our own rules for taking Eddie and making him shrink. I am excited to see what creative ideas you all have on how to make Eddie shrink. The next order of business in Stretching and Shrinking is to figure out how to use coordinate rules to move images to different parts of the coordinate graph. Kerry had a prediction today that to do this you will add or subtract "things" from the coordinate pairs. Hmmm...guess we will just have to see, won't we!?! ;-)

Question of the Day: The parking meter was invented by Carl C. Magee in the first half of the 20th century. In what year was it first used? The digits of the year sum to 18 and the year is divisible by 5.

Stretching and Shrinking Continues

Regular math classes reviewed calculating perimeters and areas of various shapes yesterday and today. Tomorrow you will be doing an activity to practice stretching images. Challenge math turned in their Wump families today and talked about how changing the rules will affect the perimeter and area of the new formed shape. I have asked challenge students to think about how they plan to shrink Eddie in the next couple of days. We will be working with how to use rules to move shapes around on a coordinate graph this week. Doing so will take creativity and a great understanding of rules and coordinates. Oh boy is this exciting stuff folks!!! :-)

Welcome Back! :-)

I sure hope everyone had a lovely break! I see some of you went south and brought back a tan...lucky you! Miss Kohr spent her break working on her house, painting, fixing some plumbing problems, and installing all new window treatments. Boy oh boy was it hard work but wow, does my place feel like home now! :-) Geez, while working on the house, you couldn't imagine how much math I caught myself using! I wonder if you could think of some ways I used math over my break (comment in the blog if you can think of anything)??? What ways did you see or use math over your break (again, leave a comment in the blog)???

Math Test TOMORROW!!!

After playing the Koosh Ball Game again today, it is still apparent that students REALLY NEED TO STUY!!! You need to know those vocab words like the back of your hand. Also, if you are having trouble writing the rules for questions #14 & #18, you need to let me know BEFORE I hand the test out tomorrow.

To help you study, here are some answers for the study guide:

#11. For Stocker's to be the best buy you would have to buy between 1-8 bags of M+M's.

#12. For Cheaper Buys to be the best deal, you would have to buy 9-10 bags of M+M's.

#13. To get full credit on this question, you will have to decide on ONE representation (narrative, graph, or table) that helps you the most and be able to effectively back that reason up. Some good reasons narratives are helpful is because they give LOTS of information. Narratives may be more difficult because there is a lot to read and it is time-consuming. Tables are good because they give exact data but may not be as good because you can't "see the picture" of what is going on with the data. Graphs are good because you can see that picture, but may be more difficult because you are making estimates of where the points on located on the graph. Using these reasons will help you to get full credit on the test...please know why the representation is good for YOU and be able to defend your answer!

#14. P = $5.50 * H
P is the price; and H is the number of hours worked
(your variables may be different but you must have the same concept)

#15. *Be sure your table lists the independent variable FIRST, your graph has the independent variable on the x-axis (bottom axis) and that you have a title on the graph and table to earn full points. Also remember to always label your graph.

#16. Number of ice cream bars being bought

#17. The cost

#18. C = $2 * N
C is the cost; and N is the number of ice cream bars being bought
(your variables may be different but you must have the same concept)

Reminders:

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Today's homework:
Challenge: Crossword puzzle, p. 12 #1-2, and p. 14 #8-12

Regular: **Test, Wednesday, October 3rd**
-Study Guides were handed out last Thursday-

Also: remember to...
~Redo any assignments necessary (you have one week to redo work in math)
~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Question of the Day: Berlin, prewar capital of Germany, lies within the borders of East Germany. The city is divided into East Berlin, with an area of 156 square miles and a population of 1,146,000; and West Berlin, with an area of 184 square miles and a population of 1,890,300. Which part of the city has more people per square mile and by how much?
