A Day of Cooperation

Today's assembly for cooperation was a blast! We were lucky to have our two Ram's Cheerleader guests Amanda & Erin here participating with us! Isn't Hollenbeck just the coolest?!? :-) I had a blast seeing our students work together as a team, using cooperation, in the foot race, human knot, and circle sit! You all did GREAT! Hope you had as much fun as I did! It is so true to say "At Hollenbeck We Expect Great Things From Great Kids!"

I also had a fabulous time in all my classes today working as a team and recognizing what it takes to cooperate in getting a task accomplished. In 2nd hour we identified the following characteristics for making cooperation effective:
~Listening carefully to others and being sure to understand what they are saying.
~Sharing when you have something that others would like to have (materials or ideas/thoughts).
~Taking Turns when there is something that nobody wants to do, or when more than one person wants to do the same thing.
~Compromising when you have a serious conflict.
~Doing your part the very best you possibly can. This will inspire others to do the same.
~Showing appreciation to people for what they contribute.
~Encouraging people to do their best.
~Making people feel needed. Working together is a lot more fun that way.
~Not isolating or excluding anyone. Everybody has something valuable to offer, and nobody likes being left out.

Third hour used these awesome ideas to create a new animal: naming it, drawing it, and deciding where it lives. We will share these with the class tomorrow. Fourth hour had a wonderful time racing in the chalkboard races. For fun, we will try just one more at the beginning of the hour tomorrow. Fifth hour did a great job with their comic strip chaos! What funny comics we found, huh?!? I especially liked seventh hour's affirmative fold-ups. Boy did we do a great job of making others feel good today! :-) Lastly, eighth hour wrapped up the day with a valuable discussion of how using effective cooperation makes such a HUGE difference in the way we accomplish tasks and how we feel about ourselves and others in doing so. Altogether...what a GREAT day!!! :-) :-) :-)

Reminders:

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Today's homework:
None

Also: remember to...
~Redo any assignments necessary (you have one week to redo work in math)
~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Question of the Day: The first national broadcast of the television program "Sesame Street" was 51 days before New Year's Day in 1970. Give the date and the year of the "Sesame Street" premiere.

Good luck my savvy students!!! Remember, the first student to answer the Question of the Day correctly will get a small prize from me the next day! :-)
