Pop Quiz Central...

Today we had a pop quiz in regular math. Students were allowed to use their notes from class for this quiz (and all answers should have been able to be found in their notes). This should help students to see the importance in taking good notes. I have warned students that pop quizzes can happen at any time, any day so they need to always be on top of what they are learning.

Challenge students reviewed their study guides today and will have a quiz tomorrow over Investigations 1 + 2.

Conferences were a HUGE success with nearly 87% attendance by parents and unbelievably great comments on the survey! Kids set new goals for themselves and really did a fabulous job "taking charge" of their learning, reflecting and sharing! I am super proud of everyone involved! :-)

REMINDERS:

~Don't forget that throughout this unit, if you ever see anything that has to do with what we are learning in class (stretching/shrinking), bring it in (or a description of it) to share with the class and Miss Kohr will give you extra points for your class grade! :-)

Today's homework:
Challenge: Quiz tomorrow over Investigation 1 + 2 (study guides were given last week and we reviewed them today in class)
Regular: None

Also: remember to...

~Redo any assignments necessary (you have one week to redo work in math)

~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Question of the Day: GO BACK AND LOOK AT OTHER POSTS...no more new questions of the day will be posted until others get answered! :-) :-) :-)

Miss Kohr...Where Were You???

Yes, I was out Friday and it threw the classes a little off schedule as they were unable to complete their assignments properly so I am giving you all one more day to correct anything that was misunderstood from the day I was gone. Challenge math is right on schedule and started their Wump Hats today by making their predictions for how the new rules/equations will affect where the hat moves on the graph. We will continue tomorrow...

Area + Perimeter Matters!

Today regular math classes are reviewing finding areas + perimeters as I have observed the major need for review. These are skills that are essential for understanding what Stretching and Shrinking has in store this quarter. Please be sure to ask questions when you don't remember how to find an area or perimeter. The sheets you completed in class today have examples at the top that are very helpful as is the Resource Packet I gave you the first week of school.

Challenge students did a self-assessment of their Wumps and discussed ways to shrink Eddie today. We recognized that 1/2X is the same thing as both .5X and X/2. This will help us to determine our own rules for taking Eddie and making him shrink. I am excited to see what creative ideas you all have on how to make Eddie shrink. The next order of business in Stretching and Shrinking is to figure out how to use coordinate rules to move images to different parts of the coordinate graph. Kerry had a prediction today that to do this you will add or subtract "things" from the coordinate pairs. Hmmm...guess we will just have to see, won't we!?! ;-)

Stretching and Shrinking Continues

Regular math classes reviewed calculating perimeters and areas of various shapes yesterday and today. Tomorrow you will be doing an activity to practice stretching images. Challenge math turned in their Wump families today and talked about how changing the rules will affect the perimeter and area of the new formed shape. I have asked challenge students to think about how they plan to shrink Eddie in the next couple of days. We will be working with how to use rules to move shapes around on a coordinate graph this week. Doing so will take creativity and a great understanding of rules and coordinates. Oh boy is this exciting stuff folks!!! :-)

Welcome Back! :-)

I sure hope everyone had a lovely break! I see some of you went south and brought back a tan...lucky you! Miss Kohr spent her break working on her house, painting, fixing some plumbing problems, and installing all new window treatments. Boy oh boy was it hard work but wow, does my place feel like home now! :-) Geez, while working on the house, you couldn't imagine how much math I caught myself using! I wonder if you could think of some ways I used math over my break (comment in the blog if you can think of anything)??? What ways did you see or use math over your break (again, leave a comment in the blog)???

Math Test TOMORROW!!!

After playing the Koosh Ball Game again today, it is still apparent that students REALLY NEED TO STUY!!! You need to know those vocab words like the back of your hand. Also, if you are having trouble writing the rules for questions #14 & #18, you need to let me know BEFORE I hand the test out tomorrow.

To help you study, here are some answers for the study guide:

#11. For Stocker's to be the best buy you would have to buy between 1-8 bags of M+M's.

#12. For Cheaper Buys to be the best deal, you would have to buy 9-10 bags of M+M's.

#13. To get full credit on this question, you will have to decide on ONE representation (narrative, graph, or table) that helps you the most and be able to effectively back that reason up. Some good reasons narratives are helpful is because they give LOTS of information. Narratives may be more difficult because there is a lot to read and it is time-consuming. Tables are good because they give exact data but may not be as good because you can't "see the picture" of what is going on with the data. Graphs are good because you can see that picture, but may be more difficult because you are making estimates of where the points on located on the graph. Using these reasons will help you to get full credit on the test...please know why the representation is good for YOU and be able to defend your answer!

#14. P = $5.50 * H
P is the price; and H is the number of hours worked
(your variables may be different but you must have the same concept)

#15. *Be sure your table lists the independent variable FIRST, your graph has the independent variable on the x-axis (bottom axis) and that you have a title on the graph and table to earn full points. Also remember to always label your graph.

#16. Number of ice cream bars being bought

#17. The cost

#18. C = $2 * N
C is the cost; and N is the number of ice cream bars being bought
(your variables may be different but you must have the same concept)

Reminders:

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Today's homework:
Challenge: Crossword puzzle, p. 12 #1-2, and p. 14 #8-12

Regular: **Test, Wednesday, October 3rd**
-Study Guides were handed out last Thursday-

Also: remember to...

I'M BACK!!! :-)

Sorry we didn't have a blog post the last two days but I am back folks...yippie!

All classes are currently learning to write rules and equations from any given information. For instance: we now know that a rule for finding distance is that distance is equal to multiplying speed and time. Remember at this point when writing equations, we DO NOT use "X" to represent multiplication. A bonus "treat" will be awarded to the first student that posts on here to tell me why this is and also to the first student that can give me alternate symbols to represent multiplication when writing equations.

Reminders:

Wonderful Wednesday

Challenge students moved into writing rules and equations from a pattern today and will continue working on this concept tomorrow (lesson 3.1). Regular math students reviewed lesson 2.2 as it was difficult for many students.

I will not be here tomorrow and all students have been informed of this. Please remember that if your name appears on the sub's notes (for negative behaviors) that results in an automatic/no-questions asked detention. Please be sure to be on your best behavior and help show our guests that Hollebeck truly is THE BEST!!! There will not be a blog post tomorrow...no question of the day...sorry! :-(

Happy Monday! :-)

Students continued to focus today on using tables, graphs, and descriptions to compare information and make decisions. The next step in helping our five "friends": Malcolm, Liz, Sidney, Theo, and Celia design their 3-day bike tour is to analyze data for how many people will pay for bike rentals at different prices. This data will help our "friends" know what to charge on their own tour. We're doing a great job here folks! I am sure our "friends" appreciate all our hard work and savviness!!! :-)

Oops...Almost Forgot Friday's Post...

Friday's lesson was 2.1: Analyzing Graphs and Tables. The objective (focus) of the day's lesson was to use tables, graphs, and descriptions to compare information and make decisions. Before getting started in the text, we shared ideas of how we compare data in our lives every day before making decisions. For instance, when buying video games we may look at the rating on the game and the game's popularity among other teens before buying it. When purchasing an item of clothing we may compare prices and styles. Someone also mentioned the idea that before buying a new skateboard, you may look at the type of wood the board is made out of to know whether it will be a good board or not. All these were great examples of looking at information to make a GOOD decision. We took this a step further and even discussed ways in which people try to sell membership packages and other sales deals to adults (my students in the future) that may turn out to be taking advantage of the buyer. We talked about using our math savviness in the future to be sure not to "fall" for gimmicks out there that will just "steal" our hard earned money. We want to be smarter than Miss Kohr's friend was with the membership package she bought this summer, right?!? :-)

In Lesson 2.1 students looked at two different bicycle rental companies cost information to help our five "friends": Malcolm, Sidney, Celia, Liz, Theo decide which company to use for their 3-day bike tour. Students pointed out that Adrian's rates were constant, meaning no matter how many bikes you rented, the cost per bike remains the same. This is shown in the graph by the points on the graph being spaced evenly throughout the entire line on the graph (constant rate). When looking at Rocky's rentals, students pointed out that as you rent more bikes, the cost per bike goes down. For instance, if you only rent 5 bikes the cost per bike is $80 ($400/5 = $80) but if you rent 50 bikes the cost per bike is $24 ($1200/50 = $24). Students concluded from this information that Rocky's wants large groups of bikers to rent from them (thus why they give deals to big groups); whereas Adrian's does not give any deals for more bikes rented. Lastly, students decided that when looking at the best shop to rent bikes from the decision depends on the number of bikes you are renting. Meaning, if you look at the graph and table, you will see that Adrian's is the best deal for bike rentals until you reach a point of renting over 30 bikes (then Rocky's becomes the best deal). I mean really...how smart are Miss Kohr's math students, eh?!? SOOOOOOOO SAVVY!!! :-)

Oooh...almost forgot...students took another timed multiplication test on Friday. All scores are posted in the comments section on Pinnacle. Check it out!

Reminders:

From Friday, September 14-Wednesday, September 18 we will be raising money for Everett Gotway's Memorial. We were deeply saddened by the loss of one of our Hollenbeck family members and would like to purchase a bench and plaque in his honor. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Objectives...

In all math classes we talked about setting objectives and knowing the reason/purpose behind the activities we do each day in class. For instance, the day we did Jumping Jacks was not about health and fitness but really about collecting data and displaying our results in both a table and graph. The objective for today and tomorrow's classes is for students to use tables, graphs, and descriptions to compare information and make decisions.

As an opener, we discussed where we see data collected and displayed in our lives (for example: advertisements like "Nine out of ten dentists prefer Trident over other brands."). As an opportunity for extra credit, I have asked students to look for more examples and bring them in to class tomorrow. This could be a commercial, magazine, newspaper, etc...and doesn't have to be all advertisements. We talked about how Consumer Reports collects and displays data and their purpose for doing so.

Challenge math began working on Lesson 2.1: Renting Bicycles today. In this lesson, they must compare two bicycle businesses to determine which one has the best offers. As Kerry pointed out, this is essential for new businesses to do (compare to others) in order to create a successful start to their new business.

A Day of Cooperation

Today's assembly for cooperation was a blast! We were lucky to have our two Ram's Cheerleader guests Amanda & Erin here participating with us! Isn't Hollenbeck just the coolest?!? :-) I had a blast seeing our students work together as a team, using cooperation, in the foot race, human knot, and circle sit! You all did GREAT! Hope you had as much fun as I did! It is so true to say "At Hollenbeck We Expect Great Things From Great Kids!"

I also had a fabulous time in all my classes today working as a team and recognizing what it takes to cooperate in getting a task accomplished. In 2nd hour we identified the following characteristics for making cooperation effective:
~Listening carefully to others and being sure to understand what they are saying.
~Sharing when you have something that others would like to have (materials or ideas/thoughts).
~Taking Turns when there is something that nobody wants to do, or when more than one person wants to do the same thing.
~Compromising when you have a serious conflict.
~Doing your part the very best you possibly can. This will inspire others to do the same.
~Showing appreciation to people for what they contribute.
~Encouraging people to do their best.
~Making people feel needed. Working together is a lot more fun that way.
~Not isolating or excluding anyone. Everybody has something valuable to offer, and nobody likes being left out.

Third hour used these awesome ideas to create a new animal: naming it, drawing it, and deciding where it lives. We will share these with the class tomorrow. Fourth hour had a wonderful time racing in the chalkboard races. For fun, we will try just one more at the beginning of the hour tomorrow. Fifth hour did a great job with their comic strip chaos! What funny comics we found, huh?!? I especially liked seventh hour's affirmative fold-ups. Boy did we do a great job of making others feel good today! :-) Lastly, eighth hour wrapped up the day with a valuable discussion of how using effective cooperation makes such a HUGE difference in the way we accomplish tasks and how we feel about ourselves and others in doing so. Altogether...what a GREAT day!!! :-) :-) :-)

In today's Investigation, students explored creating a table from a graph and then interpreting data from both sources. Having an understanding of the benefits and disadvantages to analyzing data from both a table and a graph are essential pieces to 7th grade math this year! These questions will appear many times throughout this topic, as well as, later in the school year. So, be sure you have a solid idea of why each organizational tool is effective and not so effective when analyzing data. Challenge math went a step further today to talk about the pros and cons of using narrative form in data collection and description.

Tomorrow classes will begin Investigation 2. In this Investigation students will continue analyzing data with the use of graphs and tables. They will be thinking of ways to help our 5 friends: Celia, Sidney, Liz, Malcolm, and Theo make their bike tour business the most success possible!

Reminders:

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Day 2: Lewes to Chincoteague Island (Lesson 1.4)

Today we find our five students: Sidney, Liz, Celia, Malcolm, and Theo making a trip from Lewes, Delaware, to Ocean City Maryland. Celia's data is collected and displayed in the graph on p. 12 of your text. When looking at the data, please remember the "mile markers" idea. This will help you to understand how in the world these students could actually decrease in distance while in their travels. Who remembers how/why this happened during their trip???

As a side note, (and strictly for fun-purposes) today we also learned about the Assateague (A suh teeg) Island pony auction. As promised, more information can be found on this real-life event by clicking above (on the link). As well, you can look up more information on GPS systems by visiting PHSchool.com and typing in the web code: ane-9031. When at the site, click on Variables & Patterns to see the viewing options. Anyone that brings in interesting information to add about math (in reference to these topics) will be rewarded with extra credit for the class. Good luck and be sure the information is both interesting and in reference to math! :-)

Reminders:

Graph, graph, graph away!!! :-)

The learning objective today was for students to use their data from their Jumping Jacks Experiment, Variables & Patterns vocabulary, and knowledge of graph making to create a graph of their results.

The following are the vocabulary words we defined in class (from pages 7-9):

Variable-a factor that changes (in an experiment or equation)
Coordinate Graph- shows the relationship between two variables (how one affects the other)
X-Axis-the horizontal number line on a graph
Y-Axis-the vertical number line on a graph (the cheerleader makes Y stand up)
Dependent Variable (DV)-the one you measure (or count, time), it changes because of what you do with the independent variable; located on the y-axis
Independent Variable (IV)-the one we control or change; located on the x-axis
Scale-the numbers on each axis
Coordinate Pair- (X,Y)

The Steps for Graphing:

1. Pick the variables
2. Put the IV on the x-axis & the DV on the y-axis
3. Select your scale
4. Plot your data points
5. Write your title, axis labels, and key (if necessary)

With this information and your Jumping Jacks Experiment data, you will need to create a line graph with all four pieces of data (all team member's jumps recorded). Be sure to check that you have all the steps covered in your graph before turning it in. Also, you will need to be sure to know these steps and the vocabulary as you will be quizzed on them and later assessed in the Variables & Patterns district assessment.

Reminders:
Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Today's homework:
1~Complete your graph from class (if not finished)
2~Crossword puzzle
3~p. 15 #1

Let's Get in Gear!

Today in class, as expected, we discussed the good and bad aspects about working in groups...working as a TEAM! Many great comments were made about staying on task, listening to group members, and every team member doing his/her part in accomplishing the expected objective. As the year progresses, we will continue to reflect on these aspects of teamwork with the intent to improve the necessary life skill of working well with others!

After this discussion, we reviewed our homework from last night. Students were given full points on a question if they both answered the question correctly and restated the question into the answer. All students must remember that the homework policy states any assignment may be redone within one week of it being returned to them (in this case, by next Wednesday, September 5th).

Tomorrow we plan to continue working on Investigation 1.2 Making Graphs. Students will be expected to use their vocabulary knowledge from the lesson to create a graph for representing their Jumping Jack Experiment data. In addition, we will be analyzing these results in depth to decipher what changes in our endurance took place between jumping intervals.

Students need to be sure to come to class prepared (every day) with their graph paper, pencil, book, and binder (and any homework or papers that need to be turned in). If students continue to arrive unprepared, a phone call will be made home and students will be issued a detention.

Today's homework:
1~Redo Lesson 1.1 assignment if necessary
2~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Jumping Over...Graphing Begins!

We finished our experiment today in class and will begin graphing our information tomorrow. As well, we will be introduced to some new vocabulary words for Variables and Patterns that will help our understanding in mathematics throughout the remainder of the year. Our class will also conduct a very short discussion of how we feel we did working in our groups yesterday and today (Did we stay on task/focused?, Did we listen to each other? Did we follow directions well? Did we get along? Did everyone complete their jobs effectively?, etc...). I ask the questions, what went well, didn't go well, and could have been better (for next time)? Feel free to throw out some ideas, thoughts, and/or feelings here to get this conversation started.

Today's homework:
1~p. 7 questions B + C; all questions must be restated in the answers and answered using complete sentences (at all times, unless otherwise specified by me).
2~Skills Test (WITHOUT USE OF A CALCULATOR OR ANYONE ELSE'S HELP)
3~KEEP STUDYING THOSE MATH FACTS...you could have another timed test any day now :-) :-) :-)

Jumping Jacks for Endurance

Today's experiment got off to a great start! I saw students using good team work skills and exercising a great deal of listening to each other to make the process work effectively. Way to go guys/gals! For those not in class today, we read pages 2-7 in our book and discussed the questions presented in the reading. Students came up with great ideas for which variables will affect both Sidney, Celia, Liz, Malcolm, and Theo's bike tour, as well as our number of jumping jacks in our experiment. Boy oh boy, do we have some intelligent students here at Hollenbeck! We will continue working on our experiment tomorrow, so get a good night's rest and be sure to wear comfortable shoes! :-)

Question of the Day: Pete Rose set a new record in 1985 for total number of hits in his career. He set this new record on the anniversary of the previous record-holder Ty Cobb's last time at-bat. In what year was Ty Cobb last at-bat? The number of years between records is a two-digit number. Both digits are primes. The smallest prime is the tens' digit. The sum of the digits is 12.

Good luck my savvy students!!! Remember, the first student to answer the Question of the Day correctly will get a small prize from me the next day! :-)

P.S. Be sure to be practicing your multiplication facts folks...you may have a timed test any day at any time! :-)

Welcome to Math Savvy @ Hollenbeck Middle!!!

Welcome everyone to our class blog! First and foremost, I need to apologize for the size of this blog post. There is a lot to share for the first two weeks of school but don’t worry, not all blog posts will be this long! I am super excited for what we have in store this year! Between our class website, schoolnotes.com, and this blog, I sure hope you and your parents will not have any trouble staying informed and on top of your education this school year. The purpose of this blog is to strike up conversations about math, as well as, provide a place for students to receive help from both their peers and me.

What’s been going on in math:

~First Week of School~

We started the year off with a bang! Our Huddle Up Tailgate Party (@ schedule pickup) and Back to School Pep Rally (first day) were a blast for sure! What fun our students had watching their teachers play games, sing & dance with excitement for a new school year! Over the summer, many teachers (myself included) spent numerous hours attending workshops and conferences; planning, and preparing ways to help our school become the VERY BEST in academics and character!!! Our first week of school was dedicated to implementing strategies designed to help students feel more at home and recognized within our school community. Tuesday and Wednesday focused mainly on Hollenbeck’s Four Core Ethical Values: Honesty, Kindness, Respect & Responsibility, while the next two days were spent discussing expectations for students in all areas of the school (hallways, cafeteria, classrooms, assemblies, and on the bus). This school-wide attempt to help our Hollenbeck Family reach its mission: Achieving Academic and Personal Growth, was evident throughout the first week! I can’t wait to see the growth you all will continue to make this year!

~Second Week of School~

During the beginning of this week, our class took some time to discuss safety issues in reference to the Internet. Being that this is an eMINTS classroom and we will be utilizing a great deal of technology on a regular basis, I feel it is extremely important that my students are knowledgeable on ways to be safe when online. We viewed both Amy’s Choice and Tracking Teresa and held an in-depth discussion of real safety issues in regards to communication online. In this same way, I would like to recommend some pieces of advice when participating in this blog:

1) Before posting any information or opening your own blog of any kind, you MUST first receive your parent’s permission.
2) I STRONGLY recommend that no matter what you post online (on this blog or elsewhere); if the option is there for your post to be private, make it private! This will keep people who have no business contacting you from being able to know anything about you.
3) Think BEFORE you post! Remember that what you say will be viewed by others as is true with many things is life…you can’t take back something you’ve said (especially when it is posted on the Internet). I will have overriding access to deleting and modifying comments when necessary but please be sure to stay focused and appropriate when adding to our class blog.

We ended up this week taking time to find out what we know already in math. The last few days have been filled with a very long assessment of skills. This test was prepared with the intention of helping students and parents recognize student strengths and weaknesses in mathematical abilities. We will take the same test at the end of the year to give you a true picture of what you have learned in entirety this school year. In addition to this assessment, students completed a timed multiplication test today. Every year parents ask how they can help their child grow in their successes in math; this is my initial suggestion to my students…LEARN YOUR MATH FACTS!!! :-) :-) :-) Parents may view their child’s multiplication test percentage on Pinnacle (located in the notes section). Please be sure to ask if you have any questions regarding any of this information.

TODAY’S SUPERSTAR STUDENTS:

Scoring 100% on their Multiplication Timed Test: Joe Crawford (2nd hour) & Nicole Kuhlmann (3rd hour)

Class Highest Scores on the Multiplication Timed Test: Tommy Mai (4th hour), Megan Wood (5th hour), Kenny Griffin (7th hour), & Taylor Powell (8th hour)

Honorable Mentions: Tyler Rauth (2nd hour), Morgan Carlson (3rd hour), & Amber Walter (7th hour)

ALL OF YOU ROCKED THIS TEST!!! CONGRATS YOU ARE A TRUE SUPERSTAR!!! :-) :-) :-) KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!! :-) :-) :-)

What’s coming up???

Next week we will begin with our Jumping Jack’s Experiment in our Variables and Patterns book. Hope to see you come with some energy and excitement for learning…this is going to be fun!

Main learning objectives for V & P (Variables and Patterns):

-Identifying variables in situations
-Recognizing situations in which changes in variables are related in useful patterns
-Describe patterns of change shown in words, tables, and graphs
-Construct tables and graphs to display relationships between variables
-Observe how a change in the relationship between two variables affects the table, graph and equation
-Use algebraic symbols to write equations relating variables
-Use tables, graphs, and equations to solve problems

Miscellaneous:

~If you haven’t turned in your eMINTS CUP (Computer Use Policy) or Parent Survey do so soon so you don’t have to miss out on any fun stuff in class this year!

QUESTION OF THE DAY— Each year in the Chinese calendar is named after one of 12 animals. The year 2007 is the year of the PIG. How many years in the 21st Century are "Years of the PIG"?

**Be the first student to reply correctly to the Question of the Day and you will receive a small treat in class on Monday!!! Good luck!!! :-)

Have a WONDERFUL weekend everyone!!! See you on Monday!
